Course Description

African Cosmology & Obatala/Yemòó Survey: Principles, Divination, and Initiatory Foundations

Course Overview:

This course orients students to the principles of polytheistic African culture, focusing on the lineage and philosophical framework of Òòṣàlá (Ọbàtálá) devotion. Students will explore the historical foundation of White Juju Spirituality as an African religious science, the distinction between divine forces and malevolent entities, and the role of divine law and order (Maa/Maat/Odù) in spiritual practice. Emphasis will be placed on African cosmology, moral order, and ethical responsibilities of priesthood, contrasted with disorder, demonolatry, and cultural appropriation.

This 16-week course consists of three interconnected classes:

1. African Cosmology & Cosmogony – Understanding the two supreme creators, divine vs. malevolent forces, and the philosophical structure of the universe.
2. Obatala, Yemòó, Oosa Funfun & Orisa Survey – Exploration of key deities, their sacred practices, and historical lineage.
3. Initiation & 16 Cowrie Divination Foundations – Introduction to initiation principles, ethics, and the 16 Cowrie (Ẹẹ́rìndínlógún) divination system.

Format: 2-hour sessions weekly over 16 weeks, combining lectures, discussion, and practical exercises.

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

• Explain the inseparable relationship between African philosophy, religion, and spirituality.
• Identify the historical lineage and denominational distinctions within Òòṣàlá devotion.
• Distinguish between Òrìṣà, ancestral spirits, nature spirits, and malevolent entities.
• Apply African cosmological principles of Maa/Maat versus Asfet/Isfet in spiritual practice.
• Demonstrate cultural discernment to recognize authentic African spiritual practice versus hybridized or appropriated forms.
• Understand ethical and moral codes required for priesthood, mentorship, and community guidance.
• Recognize spiritual and social dangers of disorder and implement methods to align with divine order.
