Obatala 16 Cowries Divination
In today’s spiritual climate, much of what is taught and practiced under the name of Ifá has been distorted, sanitized, or outright fabricated. Many Babaláwo and Ìyánifá present themselves as custodians of ancient wisdom, yet cannot explain the very foundations of their cosmology, their cosmogony, or even distinguish between the two. This is not a criticism of Ọ̀rúnmìlà or the authentic devotees of Ifà it is a call to expose misinformation and restore the truth about our sacred traditions. As well as to be the one to speak the truth about Obatala 16 Cowries Divination.
16 Cowries: Not from Ọ̀rúnmìlà
One of the greatest misconceptions today is the origin of the 16-cowrie divination system (Idáàṣà). The 16 cowries did not originate from Ọ̀rúnmìlà. It was Ọbàtálá who sanctioned and brought the system into the world. Divination poems reveal that Ọ̀rúnmìlà himself once consulted a 16-cowrie diviner before he began using Ikin. There are stories proving how the 16 cowries came directly from Olódùmarè to Ọbàtálá, and how Ọbàtálá sanctioned both Ọ̀rúnmìlà and Ọ̀ṣun to operate with wisdom and knowledge before descending into material reality.
All divination systems are not the same, even though they may all be effective in guiding. The tendency to flatten or “unify” all systems under Ifá is similar to how Western scholars claim all cosmologies are just different interpretations of one event. This is false. There are distinct operations, separate events, and unique spiritual intelligences at work. They preside over different account in reality.
Misrepresentation and Sanitization
Many so-called priests claim that 16 cowries is simply a “condensation” of Ifá, or that it is “newer” than Ifá. This is not true. They tell you all deities speak the same when they do not. They blur lines between traditions, erase distinctions, and sanitize culture for convenience and profit. Some diviners misappropriate the ẹsẹ from Ọ̀kànrànsodé saying that the bag of wisdom is 16 cowries and Ifà which Ọ̀ṣun and Òrúnmìlà acquired, which also is not true. This ẹsẹ speak on these entities capacity to operate as wisdom and knowledge which Ọbàtálá preordained them to do so before they entered physical reality. This is captured in the 16 cowries ẹsẹ from the Odù Ọ̀sá. This is not only misleading but deeply disrespectful to the Òrìṣà themselves.
Where are their Ẹsẹ, their Pípè, their Orin, their chants and songs to back up what they claim? Without these, their teachings are empty words. As an Ọbàtálá Babalórìsá, I can tell you plainly: too many Ifá priests and priestesses have been deceiving people for money, using spiritual authority as a mask for exploitation.
Ọbàtálá’s Seniority and Authority
Let us be clear: Ọbàtálá is the Ọbàtarìsà — the authority of all the deities. No Òrìṣà operates rogue outside the sanction of their elder. Ọbàtálá is not the oldest, but he is the most senior, just as Èjì Ogbè is not the eldest Odù but rose to seniority through character. Èṣù is not senior to Ọbàtálá. Nor is Ọ̀rúnmìlà. We have the divination poems and chants to prove this is.

More troubling is why individuals initiated into multiple Òrìṣà, but not into Ọbàtálá or Yemòó, feel compelled to tell stories or speak with certainty about traditions that do not pertain to them at all. We must let the Ancestors speak, and let the deities speak for themselves. Each Òrìṣà has its own practice. Ọbàtálá is not under the governance of Ifá, has never been “initiated” into Ifá, and does not rely on Ifá. Ọbàtálá has his own system.
Idáàṣà: Counting the Oosa
The term Idáàṣà comes from “the counting of Oosa,” meaning Ọbàtálá. Ancient worshippers of Ọbàtálá — recognized him as Ausar (Osiris). They share the same titles, praise names, and are the exact same Spirit Force and Intelligence. The 16-cowries and the ancient 16-piece divination system came from Ausar when he was murdered, purified in the spirit world, and scattered into 16 pieces. These also correspond to the 16 pieces of the Sah (Orion) star constellation.
Exposing the Fallacy: Speaking Without Experience
It is shocking how some teachers claim authority over the 16-cowrie system without ever being initiated into Ọbàtálá. To instruct, interpret, or claim expertise in a system that one has no initiation or experience in is not only misleading but spiritually irresponsible. These individuals may speak eloquently about what they have read or heard, yet they cannot convey the wisdom that comes from direct connection, lineage, and initiation.
The Obatala 16 Cowries Divination system is deeply rooted in Ọbàtálá’s spiritual lineage. Without initiation, devotion, or invoking, communicating or being possessed by the deity one cannot fully understand or teach it authentically. Oversimplifying or conflating it with Ifá misrepresents its sacred nature, erases distinctions, and confuses practitioners seeking guidance. Spiritual practices are not commodities to be marketed — they are living traditions that demand respect, accountability, and lineage.
Restoring Truth to the Tradition
This is not about disrespecting Ọ̀rúnmìlà, Ifa, or their authentic adherents. Ọ̀rúnmìlà is the Spirit Force and Intelligence of sagacious wisdom — his function is to discern the relationships between multiple entities so that order and harmony are maintained. But Ọbàtálá was there first. Despite false, politically motivated poems claiming otherwise, Oduduwa did not create the world — Ọbàtálá did. Why consult the recorder when you can consult the initiator. Obatala 16 Cowries Divination system is senior and most ancient.
It is time to stop sanitizing and flattening our sacred culture. It is time to restore the distinctions, the hierarchies, and the actual history of these systems. It is time to honor Ọbàtálá’s true role and hold all teachers accountable to truth, scholarship, and spiritual integrity. Please continue to do your own research about Obatala 16 Cowrie Divination system, the truth is not too hard to find.
